Hi
I installed Presto on a nc8000, but after choosing "Xandros Presto" in boot menu grub just showed me his command prompt (like many others in this forum). I ivestigated a little and found out the following:
GRUB is just unable to find his root, and therefore the presto.lst file. If i manually enter at the prompt:
>root (hd0,0)/
>configfile /presto.lst
Presto is booting up and everything is working fine.
Any suggestions how i can tell GRUB PERMANENTLY where his root is?

Thnx

Hello

Please explain a little more you configuration

are you running vista/xp other linux how you computer boot ?

vista boot manager ? grub ?

if you running xp/vista the problem seems to come from the Microsoft boot loader you have to edit your microsoft boot file to specify the root disk

Hi
sorry for being so unprecise.
I am running XP Pro using Windows Boot manager. My boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\xanldr.mbr="Xandros Presto"

I tried Presto on several Laptops, and the boot.ini always looked like this, that´s the cause why i did not mention it in my original post.

How can I specify the root disk in boot.ini?

hummm... nice problem lol

- Check your presto.lst file
My presto is in "c:\presto"
Code: Select all
default      0

timeout         0

hiddenmenu

title   Xandros Presto

root (hd0,0)/Presto

kernel   /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.29-presto fastboot ahci.ignore_sss=1 quiet PRESTODEV=/dev/sda1 PRESTOPATH=/Presto WINDEV=/dev/sda1 PRESTODEV=/dev/sda1 PRESTOPATH=/Presto WINDEV=/dev/sda1

initrd   /boot/initramfs.img

- check if c: is your PRIMARY and ACTIVE partition
- check your drive letter with a partition manager at boot not in windows (with a boot cd/usb) you can use "acronis disk director" use the safe mode and check if hd0,0 is C: (but leave this check at last)
- copy presto.lst to all other partition

cose in here what happen in you computer
1. the win boot load correctly
2. the win boot find correctly C:\xanldr.mbr cose grub load
3. your brub don't seem to find presto.lst

what's the exact error of grub ?

check and let me know

;)

My presto.lst is also in c:\ and looks exactly like yours.
My C: is ACTIVE and PRIMARY and ist the only partition on this laptop.
Windows boots the normal way.
Grub doesn´t display any error. He just gives his Version Information and the prompt.
linux fdisk says first partition has letter c.

thnx

don't know ... :(
every thing seems to be good !

maybe "xanldr.mbr" or "xanldr" is broken...
i'll post the md5 hash of this 2 files later
(the file "xanldr" not "xanldr.mbr" is present on you c: ? )

maybe it's a bug, if it's the case you have to signal it to presto from the support button on the main site
presto support team are not active on the forum.... :s

i'am thinking about a solution ... i let you know if i have any idea

On my system :
"xanldr.mbr" = 9,0 KB - 9,216 Bytes
"xanldr" = 158,7 KB - 162,492 Bytes

w'll check the md5 when i reboot ;)

Possible solution:

I have a brand new Lenovo Ideapad S10-2 netbook with Windows 7 Starter edition and a SATA hard drive. I installed Presto on it and everything worked flawlessly.

I then downgraded to Windows XP. To be able to install XP on this computer, I have to go to the BIOS and change the SATA controller to compatibility mode (=IDE mode) instead of native AHCI. XP installed OK.

I now installed Presto again, rebooted, only to find that I cannot get to Presto, but instead am left with the grub prompt.

Finally, after changing back to AHCI mode, I was able to start Presto.
